Literacy Narrative Reflection

In the narrative, “Understanding the Motives Behind the Medical Field,” I understand that the genre is writing a literacy narrative and discussing strong emotions that appeared while viewing the image is from Chariot, “A Clinical Lesson at the Salpêtrière.”

This narrative includes my perspectives while using examples shown in the image. Using an opinionated tone to show that I based this piece of work on my points of view while using formal language. I wrote this literacy narrative via Office Word, and it’s split up into four paragraphs. Two of the main paragraphs introduce my reasoning of why I felt this emotion and including what people will feel while viewing the image. It inspired me to write this literacy narrative because I wanted to practice writing my own opinions on a formal assignment. By completing this, it helps my analysis in any other assignment to be deeper and clearer. Also, the purpose of writing this narrative is to show other individuals that there will always be two sides to a story. While more people may have felt angry or disgusted, I have experienced no drastic emotions. And I wanted to describe that point of view with other people so they could have a more reasonable understanding of my opinion. The potential audience for this essay will mainly be scholars who felt that the men in that image we’re using the patient in a wicked way. And, for people undecided on how to feel about this certain image. Those are my main audience because, as mentioned before, I wanted to show people my points of view.

While developing this narrative, my viewpoint was mainly in the third person since they taught me to write like that ever since elementary school. I may have included some first-person perspective for the readers to understand that I base this narrative on my own opinions and perspective. I believe the relationships between me, the audience, and the medium is that we are all young adults who live in a society where most things are electronic. To get this message across, I wrote this story on a word document. So, it will be easier to share and spread with other individuals who may like to read this certain literacy narrative.

When I first explored and analyzed this image, I did not understand where to begin. I knew my first emotion was feeling nothing towards the image. Not even a smidge of pity or sadness because I believe the doctors are trying to help this patient who was a woman. When listening to other people’s ideas, that distorts my judgment and started to look away from my genuine emotions. As a result, I repressed all ideas and tried to abandon the theories my classmates had and look at the image from scratch. To be truthful, it was difficult to write a literacy narrative based on my personal opinions and an image that had no words. But based on peer reviews I had online and in-class, I started to see that a picture truly is worth 1,000 words. But it all depends on how you describe the image in the introduction because background knowledge is key to this whole literacy narrative. Finally, this literacy narrative assists me to deliver my opinions across without being seen as a hypocrite.
